1/4 de Som formed in Porto, Portugal in the early 2000s. The group consisted of Carlos Mendes, André Rosário, Bruno Almeida, and José Carvalho. Their music combined experimental and electronic elements with fado, a traditional Portuguese genre.
Their debut single "Angústias" came out in 2003. The song's title translates to "Anguish," and its themes of longing and alienation connected with listeners. They followed it with albums like Medo in 2005 and A Vida Sai in 2008.
Some traditionalists criticized their approach to fado, while others appreciated their innovation. Other songs in their catalog include "Essa é pra você" and "Samba Meio Torto."
