Artillery: Razamanaz and Beyond
Formation and Early Success
Artillery, a Danish heavy metal band, emerged in 1982 from the ashes of another local group, Warning. Led by the charismatic vocalist Flemming Rønsdorf, the band's initial lineup included guitarist Michael Stützer, bassist Morten Stützer, and drummer Carsten Nielsen.
In 1985, Artillery released their debut album, "Fear of Tomorrow," which showcased their signature sound of fast-paced, aggressive metal tinged with melodic elements. The album received critical acclaim and established the band as a rising force in the European metal scene.
Razamanaz: Breakthrough and Controversy
1989 marked a pivotal moment for Artillery with the release of their third album, "By Inheritance." The album featured the iconic track "Razamanaz," which became a massive hit and propelled the band to international stardom. The song's infectious riff, catchy chorus, and energetic performance resonated with metal fans worldwide.
However, "Razamanaz" also sparked controversy due to its alleged resemblance to the 1982 song "Turbo Lover" by Judas Priest. Despite the accusations, Artillery maintained their innocence, claiming that they were unaware of the song and that the similarities were coincidental.
Challenges and Lineup Changes
Throughout their career, Artillery faced numerous challenges, including lineup changes, health issues, and legal disputes. Flemming Rønsdorf departed the band briefly in the early 1990s, while Michael Stützer left in 1999. These departures forced the band to recruit new members, including vocalist Søren Adamsen and guitarist Peter Thorslund.
In 2010, Artillery lost another founding member when Carsten Nielsen passed away due to cancer. The band honored his legacy by continuing to perform and release music in his memory.
Discography and Legacy
Despite the setbacks, Artillery has maintained a prolific output, releasing nine studio albums, several live albums, and EPs. Notable releases include "When Death Comes" (1990), "B.A.C.K." (1999), "X" (2009), and "Penalty by Perception" (2013).
The band's legacy extends beyond their hit "Razamanaz." They are widely recognized for their contributions to the thrash metal genre, their energetic live performances, and their ability to balance aggression with melody.
