As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã were an all-female trio from Salvador, Bahia, formed in 1951 by sisters Maria Alice, Maria do Carmo, and Maria do Céu. They performed in local bars and festivals, building their sound from traditional Brazilian rhythms with touches of jazz and blues. Their songs like 'O Mar' and 'Rainha do Mar' often dealt with themes of love and social issues, sometimes drawing criticism for challenging gender norms.
Their first album, 'Maria Alice, Maria do Carmo, e Maria do Céu,' came out in 1957, followed by 'Canções de Amor e Saudade' in 1959 and 'Maré Mansa' in 1962. The title track from that last record became their best-known song, a ballad about life's quiet moments. They kept performing with Maria Alice on vocals and percussion, Maria do Carmo on vocals and guitar, and Maria do Céu on vocals and bass.
Maria Alice died in 2007, Maria do Carmo in 2006, and Maria do Céu in 2019. Their music, including tracks like 'Passado e Presente' and 'Conto de Areia,' remains part of Brazil's musical landscape, remembered for its harmonies and the sisters' persistence in making it.
