J. Santos formed in Rio de Janeiro around 2007, with Jonas Santos on vocals and songwriting alongside Mauro Carvalho, Diogo Silva, and Fernando Filgueiras. Their debut album came out in 2011, and the track 'Clame' from it became a hit on Brazilian radio. The song's lyrics touched on social themes, which became something of a pattern for the band.
They've put out a few more albums since then, including 'Eu Sou a Favela' in 2013 and 'O Mundo É Nosso' in 2018. Other songs like 'Meu Amigo' and 'Não Se Vá' show up in their catalog. The lineup has shifted over time, with Jonas Santos staying at the center, and by 2023 they had added guitarist Ronaldo Silva.
At one point, there was a legal dispute over the rights to 'Clame,' which the band eventually won. Their music often mixes samba and funk with electronic touches, and the lyrics tend to comment on things like inequality or politics, which has drawn both support and criticism from listeners.
