A German ensemble blending ambient synths and medieval lyrics since the early 1990s.
For a good sense of their sound, try "Ad Mortem Festinamus" or "Blac". Both have that mournful cello and atmospheric feel they're known for.
Qntal's music pulls from old sources like Hildebert of Lavardin's poem on mortality, which they set to sparse cello and synth pads in "Ad Mortem Festinamus". Their name means "small quantity," and that fits the minimalist approach across albums from "Qntal I" onward. Songs like "Blac" and "292" keep that somber, introspective quality intact.
Michael Popp and Achim Färber formed Qntal in Germany, releasing their first album "Qntal I" in 1992. Later records like "Quiver" and "Conundrum" stuck with the blend of ambient textures and ethereal synths.
