ZAKA formed in Amsterdam in 2014 with Koen Philip on vocals and guitar, Stef Klassen on drums, Ewout Hoekstra on keys, and Kees Koopmans on bass. The band's name comes from the Swahili word for 'to wake up.' Their debut single 'Up Above' became their breakthrough track, reaching the top of the charts in the Netherlands.
Their first album was called 'Wake Up,' followed by later releases 'Gravity' and 'The Dark Side of the Sun.' The band's music blended folk, indie, and electronic elements, though they maintained a fairly introverted public presence even as their popularity grew.
