In the annals of modern pop-punk, Attack! Attack! (EUA) stands out as a band that defied conventions and left an indelible mark on the genre. From their humble beginnings to their eventual demise, the quartet's journey was fraught with challenges, controversies, and a legacy that continues to resonate.
Origins and Early Success
Formed in 2006 in Columbus, Ohio, the band initially consisted of vocalist Caleb Shomo, guitarists Andrew Whiting and Nick Thompson, bassist Adam White, and drummer Andrew Wetzel. Their breakthrough came with the release of their 2008 EP, "Stick Stickly," which featured the anthemic title track that became an instant hit.
Controversies and Internal Strife
Despite their initial success, Attack! Attack! was no stranger to controversy. In 2009, the band was accused of plagiarism after similarities were found between their song "Smokahontas" and a track by the band Hit the Lights. This incident cast a shadow over their reputation and led to a loss of credibility.
Internal tensions also plagued the band, particularly between Shomo and the rest of the members. Shomo's controlling nature and perfectionism clashed with the others' desire for creative input. These conflicts ultimately resulted in the departure of Thompson and White in 2010.
Lineup Changes and Final Album
Despite the setbacks, Attack! Attack! persevered with a new lineup featuring guitarists Ryan Nelson and Andrew Fulk. They released their debut full-length album, "Self-Portrait," in 2010. The album received mixed reviews but showcased the band's growth and maturity.
In 2012, Attack! Attack! released their sophomore album, "This Means War." The album marked a departure from their pop-punk roots, embracing a more experimental and aggressive sound. However, it failed to achieve the same commercial success as their previous work.
Disbandment and Legacy
In 2013, Attack! Attack! officially disbanded. The reasons for their separation were never fully disclosed, but it was clear that the band had run its course.
Despite their relatively short lifespan, Attack! Attack! left a lasting impact on the pop-punk scene. Their music inspired a generation of fans and helped to push the boundaries of the genre. Caleb Shomo went on to form the successful band Beartooth, while other members have pursued various musical projects.
