L.A.B., the acronym for Lost at Birth, emerged from the vibrant musical scene of New Zealand in 2016. The band's nucleus was formed by Joel Shadbolt (vocals, guitar), Brad Kora (keyboards, vocals), Ara Adams-Tamatea (drums), Stu Kora (guitar), and Tom Bass (bass).
Musical Evolution:
L.A.B.'s eclectic sound draws inspiration from a myriad of genres, including reggae, soul, R&B, and rock. Their songs often showcase soaring melodies, infectious rhythms, and introspective lyrics that explore themes of love, loss, and redemption.
Breakthrough and Challenges:
L.A.B.'s breakthrough came with the release of their single "In the Air" in 2017. The song's infectious groove and poignant lyrics resonated with audiences, propelling the band to national recognition. However, their newfound success was not without its setbacks.
In 2019, the band faced tragedy when founding member Stu Kora passed away unexpectedly. This devastating loss forced the group to confront their own mortality and the fragility of life.
Controversy and Redemption:
In 2021, L.A.B. found themselves embroiled in controversy following allegations of cultural appropriation. Some critics accused the band of using Māori cultural elements in their music without fully understanding or acknowledging their significance.
The band responded by engaging in dialogue with Māori leaders and undertaking cultural immersion programs. Through this process, they developed a deeper understanding of Māori culture and gained valuable insights into its complexities.
